 THROUGH THE LENS

A Youth Wildlife Photography Project

Wildlife in Malta

Malta's beautiful landscapes and unique environments contain an incredible range of plants and animals. Quite often we fail to appreciate the biodiversity around us, not that we don't want to, but because we either dont know what things are, or where we can find them. This project wants to give a chance to youths to learn about nature through learning and doing photography.

As urban developments expand into natural areas we continue to lose our important plants and animals. They are important pieces of the puzzle which make up an ecoystem. And why do we need to care about an ecosystem? Well, an ecoystem has various functions that we as human beings totally depend on in order to survive and be happy.

Besides the obvious services nature provides (cleaning of air and water, and providing food), nature is responsible for giving us aesthetical and cultural benefits. Yes really! People travel all over the world to be closer to nature, to see it in person, and they spend a lot of money just to see impressive landscapes, forests, plants and animals.

Here in Malta, we have some of the best landscapes and unique environments in the world. We wouldn't need to spend much to go outside and appreciate whats around us. Its time to shine the spotlight on the pockets of nature all around us. Our island is a unique environment. Some of our plants don't grow anywhere else in the world. Even our honey is dependent on the mix of wildlife we have on our door step. This project is about reconnecting people with nature, through the lens of a camera and hopefully encourage people to take pride of the country's environment, for future generations to experience.

What's this project about?

Friends of the Earth Malta is bringing together photographers and biologists to provide a number of workshops for Maltese youths to learn about photography and nature.

These workshops have been specially designed to give youths a chance to learn photography skills from a professional but also from an everyday person. Youths will then apply their new skills during hikes in nature reserves as well as in their local area.

Besides photography, youths will get a chance to develop their mapping skills which will come in handy when producing the Informative urban-nature guide containing names of different species, their location and what they look like all in a document developed by themselves.

As this is a photography project there will be a photography exhibition at the end of the year. The photographs going on display will be captured by the participating youths themselves and help to bring nature a little closer to us all.
